Most candidates take years to become professionally registered Know why? Because when there is no deadline, procrastination sets in and becoming professionally registered is no longer a priority. Telling yourself that you want to become professionally registered is not enough. I became Professionally registered with ECSA in 2013 and here are 4 ways you can speed up the training process

1. Create a structured training program with your mentor, set goals and hold yourself accountable You know that actions yield results. Create a structured training program with your mentor and set weekly goals that can be easily accomplishable. A training program is worthless if you do not complete each task. So to overcome this problem, appoint a coach who will hold you accountable for your weekly goals. Create a system where there are consequences for not completing a weekly goal.

2. Do it right first time round Not consulting with your coach and randomly writing reports on what you did over the past few years will not get you professionally registered. First understand what type of work experience you need to gain and then align your experience with ECSA requirements. Click here and download ECSA competency standards so you know what ECSA needs you to do. Report your progress to ECSA in the form of a report when you have gained all necessary experience in accordance with ECSA competency standards.

3. Don’t wait to the end to record your progress Log your work experience as you complete each training period. It’s hard to remember what work experience you gained last month Trying to recall what work experience you gained 3 years ago is even more difficult. So once you complete your training period, log your experience in ECSA Training and Experience Report (TER) Only begin with the Engineering Report (ER) once you have completed all TER’s and you meet all ECSA competency standards.

4. Be prepared for what is to follow Submitting your application and reports is the easy part. Making it through the professional review is the difficult part. In the professional review, be prepared to present how your work experience is aligned with ECSA competency standards. You will be graded on presentation, communication, knowledge of the engineering code of conduct and ethics.

 Is this journey hard?

 Sure, it’s a tough journey but if you have determination and commitment to becoming ECSA registered, then you have already completed 90% of the journey.
